INFS 6770 Exam 1

I did well on the first exam. Here is my favorite answer to one of the exam questions:
1. Information comes from data and knowledge comes from information. Knowledge is the range of understanding of information and data. Knowledge refers to how you understand business process as well as how well you know your suppliers and customers. Data is factual information and information is the quantifying of data. Knowledge changes at different levels. An example of data would be a series of facts or opinions. This data would then be process into quantified giving value to the series of data which turns the data into information. This information would be processed for understanding and then he or she would apply the knowledge acquired in some area of his or her life.
Here an example: A student has the following homework problem: Find the mean of the following numbers: 2, 4, and 6. The data would be the numbers: 2, 4, and 6. Understanding what the question is asking is from reviewing and processing all the data. Finally knowledge is used to formulate an answer using the average formula. The knowledge used to formulate the answer would be codified or explicit because it would be easy to explain how the answer is generated to another individual.

I must admit that when I heard that we were supposed to keep a blog for this class. I was really nervous. Instantly, I thought of myspace.com. I did not want to be addicted to my blog like some of my friends are. So I looked up blog in the dictionary since it was recently added. Webster defines a blog as a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections. Really blogging is no different from keeping a diary. I have been keeping a diary since elementary school, but I don’t understand why what is going on in my personal life would be of interest to someone else. For example, when reading about Attorney Ernie, I have no interest in reading about his family being stuck at the airport during the Christmas holidays. I would rather lie in the bed and read a good book not a short excerpt about his child building a snowman in Louisiana. I guess I feel that I should not read it because it is not adding in value to my life. However blogging from a business standpoint makes more since to me because it allows for companies to get immediate feedback on products and services that are provided to their customers.
